ABOUT THE PARKS
Tudor City Greens, Inc. (the Greens) is a New York 501(c)(3)not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to preserve and enhance Tudor City’s two landmarked parks. The parks are located on Tudor City Place on either side of East 42nd Street, east of Second Avenue. The Greens was formed in 1987 to assume ownership and responsibility for the parks, under the auspices of The Trust for Public Land, when Tudor City buildings were being converted to cooperative ownership by the sponsor, Time Equities.
The parks are a focal point for the community and are actively used by residents and Tudor City neighbors alike. While they are privately owned, the parks are open to the public each day from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. They have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places and are part of the Tudor City Historic District, which was designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1988.
The Greens Board of Directors is made up of Directors and Alternates appointed by each of the cooperative buildings in Tudor City, as well as representatives from the Tudor City Association and the sponsor, Time Equities. Additionally, At-large Directors may be appointed by the Board. All Board members are unsalaried.
The gardens are maintained by independent contractors including a landscape gardening foreman and his assistants, a groundskeeper and a caretaker. Their work is supplemented by Greens volunteers who undertake needed gardening tasks on a weekly basis.
In addition to caring for the parks the Board is charged with providing recreational and cultural programs for the benefit of Tudor City residents and the public. It annually hosts summer evening concerts, Christmas caroling, a Hanukkah Menorah lighting ceremony, holiday celebrations for children who reside in Tudor City and other special events.
The parks’ many bistro chairs and benches are comfortable settings for quiet conversations or casual business meetings, reading and sunning, strolling with toddlers or rocking babies to sleep, morning coffee or lunch al fresco.
A YouTube clip of Tudor City photos by Tudor City resident Juan Vich contains many beautiful images. Click here to view.
